Facebook has changed much of what we do and say. But is it making us a bit crazy??
I just had to write about something which happened to someone I know. He is a Social Media Guru and in the Real Estate world.
So we are all told the “do’s” and “dont’s” of social media; especially when it comes to Facebook. You know – don’t post anything on Facebook that you don’t want the whole world to see – or that you are afraid a client or customer may think “poorly” of you.
Well that all makes sense; but I think we get so hung on up this that we forget one simple thing: WE HAVE REAL LIVES TOO !
You know what I mean when I say “Real Lives”. We don’t always eat, breath and live our career; but we are people and we like to live a little. Should someone be afraid to post on Facebook how they love cheesy Janet Evonovich novels or enjoy The People’s Court? Or should we be pretending that we only read Books on “How to improve business” and read nothing less than the Wall Street Journal?

Of course not – that’s just silly.
So last week; when my trusted colleague was on Facebook – he started playing “One of those games”. Oohhh EVIL ! Yes; it’s true he was playing a Facebook game and worst of all – HE POSTED IT ON HIS WALL ! Surly the Social Media Police were headed to his home that very second!
Now he wasn’t doing it in the middle of the work-day. Trying to hide from his clients by playing with his Farm or City – no – it was 10pm at night! He was sitting up in bed with laptop relaxing.
And while the Social Police didn’t bang his door down; he received a few comments from others on Facebook – shunning this behavior. I mean it’s not like he was tweeting pictures of himself (or parts thereof) to others – no IT WAS A GAME – at 10PM at night !
Really People – Are we not going a little crazy? Yes; you may not want to post those college party pictures on your wall – but so what if I am playing a Facebook game at 10pm at night – or enjoying an Adult Beverage on a beach someplace?
Social Media experts say things like; “Connect with people” (on facebook) and “be yourself”… then why do we act like being “too real” is some immortal sin?
Honestly; If a client isn’t going to want to do business with me because they think I should be at work at 10pm every night instead of relaxing- then maybe we shouldn’t be working together from the start.
Everyone – CHILL – It’s JUST FACEBOOK…

Yo! Are you dissin’ Janet Evonovich?
I agree. We do have real lives and it really doesn’t matter what time of the day stuff is being done. I’m on Facebook and Twitter all different times of the day and night (although I don’t play the games and don’t “Stik” anyone)
I think there is a line, though. Wild party pictures showing us three sheets to the wind or whatever is chancy. I once saw a Facebook profile of a loan officer for a pretty big, well known mortgage company (OK, it was Wells Fargo) who “Knows Sarcasm (Fluent), Drunk and Gibberish., gibberish, Pig Latin” (this is a direct copy and paste, btw, and on Facebook for all to see)
Not sure I would want to refer any mortgage business to said loan officer. Just sayin’
